Growning Your Hair Out? Here's Some Ways To Help!

I decided last year after having my hair short for 11 years, that I was going to grow it back out. I did the crazy "my boyfriend, or in my case fiance cheated on me so I want to do something drastic" cut my hair off really short thing! Which at the time seemed empowering, but my mom cried when she saw what I had done. I loved it though! It was easy and cute, but when I started seeing all of these beautiful actresses with their flowing manes, cascading down their shoulders and backs it made me want my hair back! I spoke to my amazing stylist and we decided that if I came in and said to cut my hair off because I was tired of it, she was to NOT LISTEN TO ME! So that started this tedious process of growing my hair out. I read everything on tips of how to grow out your hair faster, some were just ridiculous, but some made since. These are the tips that I am using to help my hair, they may not work for you, but so far I have had success.

I have super thick hair so I can not wash my hair everyday, I can go for 2-3 days without washing it usually. I use 3 different shampoos and conditioners, I use a different one each time I wash my hair. I like to mix it up I think it keeps your hair from looking dull. I use Moroccan Oil, Lanza Healing Color Care, and Nioxin Scalp Treatment. After I get out of the shower I use a pick and then I use Moroccan Oil treatment in distribute it evenly throughout the ends of my hair and what is left over on my hands I run through the top part (do not use a lot on the top or it will look greasy.) I then twist my hair up in a towel and let it dry for a few minutes . I then dry it, and most days I don't use styling products or hot irons on my hair. This really has helped out with the split end situation.

I read up on a lot of vitamins, and how Biotin and B vitamins are the main two components of growing and maintaining strong and healthy hair. Also Vitamins A, C, and E helps with keeping your immune system functioning properly, good blood circulation, and increases the uptake of oxygen which increases circulation the scalp and follicles which can speed hair growth! I love the Hair Skin & Nail vitamin by Natures Bounty. I take 3 tablets everyday, and I could really tell a difference within 2 weeks of taking them.

Trimming your hair is a necessity. The brushing and styling of your hair everyday takes it toll. I have a set appointment with my stylist around the seventh of every month, I usually can go two months but not longer without a trim. Now when I say trim, I mean she is just snipping of the very ends of my hair all over nothing more. I have scene some women who do not trim their hair while growing it out, and their hair looks dead. When a strand of hair is split at the end, if you do not cut it of it can split the whole strand of hair. That is when your hair ends of looking fried and dead.

A good balanced diet is also key for growing your hair out. You need a wide variety of foods in you diet. Dark green vegetables like broccoli, also salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids which support scalp help. Would you believe that beans are also an important part of healthy hair? Not only do they provide protein, but also iron, zinc, and biotin. Also you need to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day!

So I hope I have inspired some of you who are trying to grow your hair out, to not give up! We can do this, it takes patients for good things to happen. Or at least that's what my momma says!

How To Be The Perfect House Guest!

Since we are all looking forward to vacations that we will be taking soon, I thought I would give some pointers about being the perfect house guest. These "how to's" are not just for staying at friends or families houses, it also includes if your go in on renting a condo or house with friends.

First, if you are staying at a friends or relatives house you need to be clear on how long you are planning to stay. You do not want "ware out your welcome" as my momma says! Be courteous, you are there at their invitation. Also if you are staying at someones home, bring a really nice hostess gift! Your gift should be something that is useful such as gourmet snack that comes from a local bakery/store in your hometown, a nice wine (if they drink.)  Or you can go another route instead of food chose a nice monogrammed paper weight, or some fancy playing cards!

When you arrive at your destination inquire about house rules, if you are renting there should be a set of rules printed out for you. Make sure to follow these rules exactly, you do not want to hurt feelings, or be charged for damages. You should also be appropriate at all times; this is for language, music, and clothing. For instance if you feel very comfortable walking around in just a towel after getting out of the shower at your house, DON'T DO THAT HERE!! Don't be afraid to help out either! When your renting, help cook, and clean up afterwards. If your staying at someones house offer to help cook, set the table, watch the kids for an hour or two so their parents can have some "free time." Even if your turned down, your host will appreciate the gesture!

B.Y.O; do not expect to use your hosts/friends toiletries or other items. If your a picky eater, "offer" to pick up some groceries, but also bring back something that everyone will enjoy such as chocolate! If you realize you have forgotten to pack your toothpaste, mention that you need to go to the local convenience store, to pick up a tube. Your friends or relatives will probably insist that you use theirs, but it shows them that your not a mooch! Also don't finish off the last of something without asking/telling someone, this goes for food and toiletries.

Keep your room, and bathroom clean while visiting! Ask your host, or room mates what time they usually get up in the morning and try to wake up about that time also. When you wake up, make up your bed and make sure to keep your room looking neat at all times. This also applies in the bathroom area. Keep all of your toiletries in your bag if your sharing a bathroom, if your not sharing keep your things neat. Wipe off the basin, and for heavens sake if you get toothpaste on the mirror WIPE IT OFF!! On the last day your there triple check your bedroom and bathroom for your belongings. Strip off the sheets on your bed and put them in one of the pillow cases at the foot of the bed. Do a quick wipe down in the bathroom, and make sure all of your dishes are washed, and your trash has been gathered. You want to leave your room/condo/house in the shape it was in (if not better) when you got there. You want to leave and impression, so make it a good one!

Last but not least, give thanks! Thank your host three times: once when your arrive, when you leaving, and once more after you returned home with a thank you note. Make it a hand written one, it's more personal that way. Throw in some details about your trip that you enjoyed, and offer up your place for them for a later date. If your rented most likely they have asked you to send a text to let them know that your are leaving and that will be suffice.

Who's Your Muse?

Just as Beatrice was to Dante; Catherine, Audrey, Victoria and Jennifer are to me. A muse is someone who inspires you in life, art; well actually just about everything! I love fashion, make up, jewelry, purses, shoes just as much as the next women; but there are certain women who just fascinate me with their style to the point that I want to emulate them! When I was younger I was all about princess Di, and Scarlet O'Hara;  you know the prim and proper ladies. So I studied them, along with reading any etiquette book I could get my hands on. I wanted to be the quintessential southern belle! Then I kind of stepped out of line with the "proper" ways of being a lady and got my first tattoo, and I thought it's not to bad it's on my back so no one will ever see it. Yet the thing about "ink" is that it is addictive! So then I got my second tattoo on it was on display for all the world to see on my wrist. Well it seemed that I had just shot my chance of ever being "lady like" or the southern belle I had always thought I would be. Then I realized that there are some great women who have tattoos that are well groomed and just as much a "lady" as anyone else! Here are a few of my own muse's for my life!

I can not say enough about Adele and how she inspires me on so many levels!

Feisty, sexy, and southern! Miranda has all the right qualities to be my muse, even   tattoos!

Oh so Posh is this lady! She is the woman that I must thank for my really expensive taste in Hermes bags! Victoria has been a muse of mine since she was in the Spice Girls!

There is simple not enough space or time to tell you how much I LOVE AUDREY!!!!!!

Polished, with style and class Catherine has given the young ladies of the world someone great to look up to as a muse!

Last but certainly not least in my book, Jennifer is one of my all time biggest muses! I love that she embraces her curves and there is just something about her that I gravitate to!

Touching Moments In Life

Have you ever watched a movie, heard a song, visited an old friend, or just people watched and in that moment you see or hear something and it just touches you deeply, so deeply that you tear up and cry? I have had a few of those moments recently, I'm not sure why but everyone of them has really made me have a new appreciation for the simple pleasure that life gives us. For instance a few weeks ago, I was not having one of the best days and a friends daughter told me that I was beautiful and that my outfit that I had on made her think that I should have been in the movie Aladdin! Ava really made me stop and take a step back and think to myself, things are not as bad as you think they are Twana.  I love the innocence that children have don't you?

I went to visit my grand-mother this past Sunday and had lunch with her. Now mind you she has Alzheimer and sometimes she doesn't even know that my mom is even her daughter, but when I walked in the house and she looked up at me and said "Hi, Twana," that just touched my soul in ways I can't even explain!!

A lady on my Facebook tonight posted that her cousin that passed away a few years ago of Ovarian Cancer, came to her last night in her dreams. It amazes me how God knows when we need to see our loved ones that have gone on before us from time to time, and he knows just how to show them to us!

I know some of you may think that Harry Potter is just a silly children's movie, but last night when I was watching the Deathly Hallows Part 2 for the 100th time the part that shows Snape passing away really touches me and I think you should all watch it. It amazes me how much he really loved Lilly, and kept Harry out of harm even though it seemed that he was the evil one out to get Harry.

"You think the dead we love ever truly leave us? You think that we don't recall them most plainly when we need?" J.K. Rowling

And this song/poem like I said yesterday has really been on my mind a lot lately. The words are amazing, but to listen to Loreena McKennitt sing it, it give me chills!

Dante's Prayer

When the dark wood fell before me
And all the paths were overgrown
When the priests of pride say there is no other way
I tilled the sorrows of stone

I did not believe because I could not see
Though you came to me in the night
When the dawn seemed forever lost
You showed me your love in the light of the stars

Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
Please remember me

Then the mountain rose before me
By the deep well of desire
From the fountain of forgiveness
Beyond the ice and the fire

Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
Please remember me

Though we share this humble path, alone
How fragile is the heart
Oh give these clay feet wings to fly
To touch the face of the stars

Breathe life into this feeble heart
Lift this mortal veil of fear
Take these crumbled hopes, etched with tears
We'll rise above these earthly cares

Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
Please remember me.

Wounded Warrior Project

I spoke to a great lady recently who told me about this project, and that I needed to read about it. I have always wanted to volunteer at a rehab facility for wounded soldiers, but there isn't one close by. So this is my way of volunteering! The lady was telling me about her brother that was injured recently and lost one of his feet to an IED in Afghanistan, and how much the Wounded Warrior Project really helped him out when he was out of the hospital. The simple things that we take for granted like being able to put on a pair of pants, is complicated for these men and women. WWP, gives out Velcro shorts to the warriors so they can have some since of normalcy, and not have to wear one of those gowns that the hospital gives you. They also provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members. These men and women have given so much for you and me, don't you think we can give them our support and love in return?
